Reasons for the Sinhalese-Tamil conflict

Citizenship right

In 1984 the government introduced a new policy of according citizenship to those who were either born in Sri Lanka or whose fathers or grandfathers were born there. As a result many of the Tamil workers brought in by British from India to work in the tea plantations became stateless. India made a deal with Sri Lanka to take some Tamils back to India while the remainders were to given citizenship right. However Sri Lanka broke the agreement and by the 80s, as many as 100,000 Indian Tamils remained stateless. Despite this, they continued to work in the tea plantations and to contribute to the country’s economy. The Tamil minority was outraged by this act and opposition to the Sinhalese dominated government grew. Denial of citizenship right was a reason for the conflict as it signaled to the Tamils that their contribution to the country was not recognized by the government.

"Sinhala only" Policy

Under the British rule, the English-educated Tamils occupied important posts in the government. After independence, the Sinhalese government made Sinhala the official language of Sri Lanka to improve the lots of the Sinhalese. This meant that the Tamils were no longer able to secure government jobs. Furthermore because the Tamils were indirectly removed from the post, it effectively denied the Tamils even a minority voice in the government. The “Sinhala only” policy was a reason for conflict as it sent a signal to the Tamils that their language was less important than that of the Sinhalese. The Tamils were angry that their interests were threatened.

University Admission

The educational policy was to restrict the accessibility of the English-educated Sri Lankan Tamils to the higher education and government employment. At the same time, it sought to increase the number of the Sinhalese educated youth in the universities and government sector. Both goals were accomplished by changing the language and admission polices in universities to favour Sinhalese students. Until 1960, all the entrance examinations to the universities were conducted in English. In subsequent years, the government began to conduct these examinations in Sinhalese and Tamil. This change, coupled with the expansion of the secondary education, intensified the competition for universities admissions. In 1970, the government adopted a pro-Sinhalese education policy by replacing merit as the criteria for the universities admissions with a system of weightage in favour of the Sinhalese students. Thus the Tamil students had to score higher marks to secure a place in the universities. This evoked a string protest from the Tamil community, but the government disregarded it. Unfair university admission policy was a reason for the conflict as it showed discrimination by the government against the Tamils which further deepen the mutual distrust and suspicions between the two communities.

Resettlement of the Population

The land settlement policies were designed to undermine the Tamil interests in the Northern and Eastern provinces. Under the state-aided colonization programme, a large number of Sinhalese were resettled in the two Tamil dominated provinces. The Tamils suspected that it was a deliberate move to change the demographic character of the Tamil provinces to dilute the concept of a Tamil traditional homeland. Thus, resettlement of the population was another reason for the conflict as the Tamils became fearful that they would become a minority in their traditional homelands.

Explain how one factor is more important than the other.

Therefore all the factors are important causes for the conflict because it was the combination of all the policy that led to conflict. The Sinhalese government deliberately and consciously introduced policies to discriminate against the Tamils. Thus the government policies proved to be ill-conceived and counter productive, as the Tamils became disenchanted with the government and declared their intention to fight for a separate Tamil state.

Okay, well, where to start? You’re probably never going read it. In fact chances are it won’t even reach you. I’m probably just writing this to myself you know for very putty reasons. I guess I should just say all this stuff especially by now but it helps to write things down rather than saying it so that we won’t forget and generally making a fool out of ourselves. It’s September third today! That means it would have been our two years and six months of anniversary. I know that I always complain those anniversaries are for twelve years old but yes, happy hypocritically anniversary. I know you probably roll your eyes at me for bring that up and I’m well aware that it has been well over a year now since you… left me, well one years three months and sixteen days. I think right now I’ve finish the process you know and I have finally come into terms with the fact that you are not coming back, ever. And I think I’m out of the phrase where I just lie on my floor and hoping that you will just turn up on my doorstep. You know what, I’m… I’m doing okay, getting there, baby steps. I’ve even… even been sort of seeing a girl. Jess is her name. My kin keeps telling me that it’s a positive step getting over you and stuff. Don’t get me wrong, she is a nice girl but different.

Sometimes on my way, I’d walk pass your house. Every time I do, I get this weird urge to knock on the door which is stupid because I know you wouldn’t answer it. Well in any case it’s technically your old house now. You’re… nowadays you’re quite far away with your new life and all. I wonder if you even remember me sometimes, I… I’d… I’d wish you talk to me, give me some… vague sign that you do remember. Because you know what, I’m not doing well, life is actually pretty shit.

And look at me, I’ve comb this whole page without using the L word in one so far but, looking at it objectively, realistically I… I would say that I still love you. And I’m kind of afraid that I won’t really stop. I… I hope they are treating you well up there, cause; I am missing you more than ever.

school reopening soon. its about time to dig out all the holiday homework and hand it up.This holiday don't really feel like holiday. Its more like everyday schooling only that schools hours are longer and you are free from some school rules like no hand phone. Life has been harder ever since than. Hopefully I could get it over soon after my birthday. Talking about my birthday, I will not be celebrating it alone this year because I will be going to do volunteer work. hello. long long time. never update already. haha! I got good news and bad news this week. I will go with the bad news first. The bad new is, tomorrow will be the last day of band and the last performance before my batch of sec4 pass down to the sec3s. now for the good news. hi people. i was doing my reflection on the Malacca trip on the news-maker software so i though that i would share with you what i wrote.

here it goes " I went to Malacca during the march holiday. We had a hell lot of fun =.=hahahahahahahahahahahaha. wth my class was so gay throughout the trip everyone touch each other of cox only the boys lah.. ha-ha!!! still haven update my blog than come update here. Than during the trip everyone laugh like hell than in the hotel we had 6person on two beds. It was like so warm with yeu jinn ha-ha!! Not that he is warm but you know he has the walking insulator.

Hahahahahahaha... LALA!!! than hmm... overall was kinda of fun with all my classmate around me. haha!! well although the tour guide was like crap and the bus-driver was like Davy Jones. I hope we have this kind of trip again."

hello people. Long time never blog already. Haha. Always got time to use computer and want to update blog but go facebook first. After facebook, no time to update blog already because i went to play bejeweled until like damn late lo. so today i decided to go blogger before facebook. haha!! smart right. anyway don't talk crap lah. lets see. this month is a damn unlucky month. WTH lo. first is my earpiece spoil than it was my Ipod earpiece hole and now my Ipod screen crack. feeling damn sad already lo. anyway, went to band this morning. it was like so cold inside lo. running nose throughout band practice. than i keep disturbing deron at band practice cause very bored while other section are learning. after band, i think nianyi and some sec2 took Mr goh car to buy lunch(chicken rice) for some of us. ate lunch at canteen. after chicken rice i wasn't full yet lo. so i went to buy cup noodle. haha!! after lunch, i went to NYP to have an elective module course. met Alwin and friends outside school, they also going NYP so i tagged along. so at the course we played with electric and LED bulb. so scary. later kanna electric shock. went to hougang mall after the course by Mr Rudy car. met up with band member in MacDonald. sit at there talk crap watch girl walk pass. than deron make fun of cindy being dog. ask her to fetch things.. haha! so cool. lolled. i think that's it for today. haha! will update soon. :D

Time really flies huh? it has been like we just had new year day and now we are going to Chinese new year already... since I last update, well a lot of things happen. things were in a hammock but I'm not really going to be talking about it. All i can say is some of the things are settled while some will remain that way for a very long time. Anyway, I'm gonna put that a side. haha!!!

lets see, whats next? arh... i brought home the tuba last Thursday and have been playing it since its home. my dad complain that I'm making noise but luckily my neighbour didn't. haha!!!

whats next? hmm... just had my reunion dinner. and i got to say, this is the only reunion dinner where my stomach was not satisfied. haha!!! but that's good because that means that i will still be able to fit in my new cloths. hahahahahaha!!!!! Chinese New Year will be here in a few hours and this year Valentine also fall on the same day. What is that man. it should come on other day lo. this means a Lonely Valentine already lo. whats even better, my common test is in the CNY period lo.. but this is also good lah. that means i could have time to study. haha!!!

hello everybody. hahahahahaha!!! it was a great day today.
although it was not a very productive day i still think that
its a great day. so morning as usual go to school. And morning
assembly. i slept through reading period(and no teacher noticed^^)
than had class. slept through Amath lesson. than went to
band room and warm up with my tuba. went back to class for
Chem SRP. after SRP i went up to band room and see the sec1s.
well not what ive expected, but at least it was something. than
went off to D&T SRP at 4pm with riky. than went home, cooked
meggi mee for myself to eat. ride bicycle to tuition ( not like some
people take taxi^.^) tuition was boring. slept for at least 1 hour
of the lesson. lucky it was Chinese, so it was not so important...
hahaha!!! than went home. than ate dinner and facebooked...

exam is tomorrow and i should be studying already.
I'm writing this formally is because Mrs tan.y.j.
told me to as it will help me with the composition.
i beg you please don't laugh at this.
why don't you try this too. maybe it could just help you.
I'm not use to writing this formal in blog.
but if it helps with my exam, why not give it a try.

so today woke up as usual at 6am.
than do the usual staff i do in the morning.
after that went to school and reach there at 6.45am.
than had my breakfast than went to parade square.
after that went back to the class for lesson.
had English lesson for first period.
English teachers did not come to school so Mr ng came in.
he told a lot of stories. learned a lot from him.
after that was Chinese lesson. have to buck up for it already.

than it was geography. a lot to learn till exam.
than was contact time with Mrs muna. she ask us to clean up class.
than had math lesson all the way till 2pm.
after that waited for Mr rudy till 4pm something.
waited so long just to hand in D&T project.

than went home together with Irwin taking bus 62.
bring back a lot of books from school.
after reaching home, went online and facebooked.
after that msn chat. than blogging.

now that I'm done, i would to share something.
my uncle is getting married. so happy for him.=)
going to attend his wedding this Sunday.
but it is held at batam; Indonesia so have to go there on Saturday.
so i won't be online for Saturday and Sunday.
anyone want anything from batam please tell me before i leave.

went to shower and blablablabla...

than went to get my uniform and wear lo... ...

ok first... arr ie feel a bit crazy today because
ie duno maybe laughing gas or something as
ie keep laughing after band and when ie reach

hello people today did nothing much but wake up in the morning at 9am help mum to buy duno what fuck than came back home at 9.35am. than after i reach home went to sleep until 1.40pm wake up by me brother go n bath n than go to school at around 2.10pm (so late) ok lah until here ie still want to do me homework u know. haha byebye people

hi people lots to do today. this morning ie wake up at 7am by me mother(so early) so ie went 2 school 4 band also quit early about 8.15am we played games 4 de whole day so we were al quit tired after break camp. we played amzing race where we had 2 run around de school n de punggol park. my group 'twisty' was de first 2 reach de ending point.at de ending point we had 2 place the letter into places group lost 1 letter 'L' so we had to run around de school shouting ie love mr aw like crazy than we can get back de 'L' . my group was de first 2 finsh the game. wee kait y u never come ?????????
